   Divorce means different decor

Of all the dislocation and pain associated with divorce, one thing is grimly certain. The wife or the husband, or possibly both, will have to leave home.

"Whether you are the leave-ee or leave-er, there is something about starting over," says Dan Couvrette, whose own breakup 12 years ago inspired him to publish Divorce magazine, aimed at those he calls "Generation Ex."

"I had three chairs for the living room but needed a couch. I had a microwave but needed a TV. My mother bought me a new set of dishes and cutlery," he recalls.

He and his ex split their art collection and he retrieved the sofa, which only reminded him of loss. "I remembered that we moved it four times, that it was where the family gathered. It wasn't a happy period for me, so the space didn't make me feel any better."

"Marriage and divorce are the two life stages that stimulate the most furniture purchases," says New York-based marketing strategist J'Amy Owens, whose clients include home furnishings retailers.

   Ex-Wife: Accused Killer Threatened Me

PHOENIX (AP) - The first wife of one of two men accused of terrorizing the city with a string of shootings said he once threatened to kill her and boasted that he knew how to get away with it.

Tracie Hazelett, 33, was married to Dale S. Hausner for a year and a half in the early 1990s.

``He wasn't very nice to me,'' Hazelett said in an interview Monday with The Associated Press at her home in suburban Avondale. ``He was very mentally abusive. He used to tell me ways he could kill me and get away with it ... He would tell me he could break my neck and put me at the bottom of the stairs and act like I fell.''

Hazelett said she was shocked to hear Hausner, 33, had been arrested last week as part of an investigation that has grown to include seven killings and the wounding of 17 people in the Phoenix metropolitan area since May 2005.

Don't let tax man cash in on misery

IN STRICTLY financial terms, the advice to those considering separation and divorce is very simple and can be summed up in one word: "Don't!"

Of course the reality is that it doesn't work like that, with statistics now showing that fewer than one in three marriages lasts the course. A number of high-profile cases in the press recently illustrate the often-disastrous financial consequences of divorce over and above the obvious emotional trauma.

Is it possible to avoid an ugly divorce?

He changed the locks on their home, she threatened to begin a new life in America with their daughter, and he froze their joint bank account. The press may be having a field day over Paul McCartney and Heather Mills McCartney's ongoing split stories, but the reality is sure to be nothing but painful for the parting couple. Whatever facts stand up in court, it's evident that the Mills-McCartney divorce has become increasingly messy.

After four years of marriage, the gloves are off. The estranged spouses are preparing for one of the costliest divorces of all time, hiring the same divorce lawyers as Prince Charles and Princess Diana to fight their corner. The high profile pair's multi-million pound dispute may not match up to the average couple's settlement, but conflict can be all too common when divorce is on the cards.

Sex club case: Cops off hook

KITTERY, Maine -- In a report released Tuesday afternoon, the state attorney general's office exonerated the Kittery Police Department and Chief Ed Strong of accusations they were negligent and interfered with the investigation of the Danish Health Club brothel.

"Our investigation revealed no credible evidence to support allegations the Kittery P.D. neglected its enforcement responsibilities or that Chief Strong improperly interfered with any investigation of the Danish Health Club," stated the report, written by Attorney General G. Steven Rowe.

In May 2004, federal agents raided the Bridge Street club, which had long been rumored a brothel. Subsequently, charges were filed against local lawyer and former Town Council chairman Gary Reiner. He was later found guilty of enabling prostitution at the club and laundering $4 million in prostitution profits.
