Slain woman planned to divorce husband

Chrissy Predham Newman had divorce papers served on her estranged husband just two days before she was found slain in her St. John's apartment, according to an affidavit filed by her mother in Newfoundland's Supreme Court.

In the affidavit, filed Friday, Yvonne Harvey says the former Ottawa woman's estranged husband, Raymond Newman, was served with court documents on Jan. 19 in which her daughter filed for divorce, custody of their child and a division of assets.

The court documents also contained an order that Mr. Newman vacate and relinquish his interest in the family home, and included allegations that Mr. Newman was abusive.

None of the allegations contained in the affidavit have been proven in court, and attempts yesterday to reach Mr. Newman and his lawyer, Randy Piercey, were unsuccessful.

   Aguirre's divorce records unsealed

A judge unsealed the divorce records of San Diego City Attorney Michael Aguirre yesterday, a move The San Diego Union-Tribune requested.

The newspaper routinely seeks to open sealed documents regarding public officials, because such records can reveal biographical details, business and investment ties and other information relevant to the official's public service.

Aguirre had charged that the newspaper's counsel had failed to give him and his ex-wife proper notification regarding the effort. But the newspaper's attorney maintains it did nothing out of the ordinary when it came to seeking the 1991 divorce records.

Absent extraordinary circumstances, divorce records cannot be sealed, noted Superior Court Judge William Howatt, who presided.

Britney Spears Splits Up With Latest Boyfriend

Britney Spears has split from new boyfriend Isaac Cohen, three weeks after the pair began dating. The singer and Cohen, both 25, were first seen together powerboating on January 2 off the coast of Marina del Rey, California and recently returned from a lavish weekend in Las Vegas.

On Thursday night, Spears was spotted at a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf cafe in Santa Monica, California where she was followed by a pack of paparazzi. As she headed back to her car, Spears told the photographers gathered, "Me and Isaac are not together, by the way." When photographers asked her if the relationship was really over, she replied, "Yes."

The star has also been romantically linked to music producer JR Rotem since filing for divorce from husband Kevin Federline last year.

Failure in protection system proves fatal

When Matthew O'Connor armed himself with three guns and began driving toward his ex-wife's Northwest Side apartment earlier this week, a monitoring officer was aware he was on the move.

Under partial house arrest for two weeks for violating a protective order against Evairene O'Connor, he was wearing an electronic monitor that paged an officer every time he left his house.

But the judge who ordered him to wear the device also had authorized him to work at a Southwest Side salvage yard between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. O'Connor was allowed one hour to drive to the yard, less than 10 miles from his home.

Law enforcement officials assumed Wednesday morning he was driving to work. They had no way of knowing for sure.

Around 6:30 a.m., he arrived at his ex-wife's apartment, broke down the door, and shot her at least 20 times with a 9 mm handgun and two Tech-9 guns, police say.

Parenting Class Required For Divorcing Couples

The Illinois Supreme Court now mandates all parents and guardians involved in a divorce, custody, visitation or paternity dispute, where children under 18 are involved, to attend a parenting class. The purpose of the class is to lessen the negative emotional impact of the process on the children and maximize the children's healthy psychological and social development. The class will last four (4) hours and each party is required to take the class at different times. The completion of the class is mandatory and the Court will not complete the lawsuit until all parties have complied. The class is offered by the University of St. Francis, Solution Resource Center. The cost of the class is $85.00 per person and must be paid at the time of taking the class. Classes are available Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
